Review: Simple Christmas Songs

Simple Christmas Songs: The Easiest Easy Piano Songs

With Christmas just around the corner, this book would be a great addition to any music library. The arrangements are accessible for beginners with less than a year’s piano playing experience, and would also make great sight-reading practice for slightly more advanced students. The book comprises 50 twentieth-century classics and contemporary Christmas songs in arrangements that are straightforward, and pleasing to the ear.  Well-known and much-loved carols such as Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer, Santa Claus Is Comin’ to Town, and Frosty the Snowman are included, along with some more ‘popular’ Christmas-themed repertoire, such as Joni Mitchell’s River, Mariah Carey’s All I Want For Christmas Is You, and Believe from the movie The Polar Express. Lyrics are included so students can sing as they play, or accompany a family Christmas sing-a-long, and the accompaniments are simple single or two-note chords that gently support the melody, and could be used as a springboard for a more richly layered interpretation for more advanced students.
